Adelaide actor Sarah Jeavons is returning to the genre that helped launch her screen career, starring in the new supernatural horror feature Ruby, Ruby, which will make its world premiere at the Adelaide Film Festival on 17 October.

The role reunites Jeavons with South Australian writer-director Ursula Dabrowsky, more than a decade after the pair first worked together on Inner Demon, Jeavons' feature film debut.

In Ruby, Ruby, Jeavons plays Ollie alongside Luca Sardelis as Hannah, two friends whose visit to an abandoned cemetery takes a terrifying turn.

Inspired by the legend of Ruby Bland, a teenage girl whose tragic death in 1909 became part of the folklore surrounding Kapunda, the film draws its supernatural story from distinctly South Australian soil.

For Jeavons, the project marks both a return to horror and an opportunity to take on a psychologically and physically demanding role. As the more cautious of the two friends, Ollie's growing unease gives way to a fight for survival that tests her emotional and physical limits.

Speaking about the experience of making the film in South Australia, Jeavons said:

“I love shooting in South Australia. There’s something really special about creating work at home, especially getting to collaborate with Ursula again after Inner Demon. She really knows how to stretch an actor emotionally and physically.

I’m so proud to have been part of Ruby, Ruby and to have worked alongside such a talented team of South Australian cast and crew.

There is so much talent and creativity here. It’s exciting to see the stories and productions coming out of our state continue to grow and reach wider audiences.”

The admiration is mutual, with Dabrowsky drawing on their previous collaboration when casting Jeavons in Ruby, Ruby.

“I cast Sarah as Ollie because we had already worked together on Inner Demon where I saw firsthand her ability to handle emotionally demanding material,” Dabrowsky said.

“For Ruby, Ruby, I knew I needed an actor who could bring both vulnerability and physical commitment to Ollie’s journey, and Sarah has that combination. She also understands the darker emotional territory of my work, which made returning to work together a very natural fit.”

Since Inner Demon, Jeavons has continued to build a career across film and television, with credits including The Shadows of Trust, Smashed, Too Dark and ANZAC Girls. Australian television audiences may also recognise her from Seven Network's SAS Australia: Hell Week in 2021.

Ruby, Ruby will make its world premiere as part of the Adelaide Film Festival's 2026 program on Saturday 17 October.
